Building the Southwest’s Seaweed Farming Industry

A Sustainable, Locally-Led Approach

The Seaweed Project’s vision is to help develop a sustainable and thriving seaweed farming industry in the Southwest, which has a locally-led and collaborative approach at its heart.

A Sustainable, Locally-Led Approach

The Seaweed Project exists to help develop a sustainable and thriving seaweed farming industry in the Southwest, with a locally-led and collaborative approach.

Seaweed’s Far-Reaching Potential

From a nutritious food source to biofuel and bioplastic development, seaweed is beneficial as both a product and as a protector of our oceans.

By cultivating seaweed in farms, instead of taking from our wild stocks, we are sustaining the natural balance of our oceans and contributing to mitigating the effects of climate change.

These wonderful underwater forests absorb carbon dioxide, which helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and will positively impact local marine eco-systems by restoring habitats, biodiversity, and improving the water quality. Furthermore, research suggests that seaweed farms could help to protect our coastlines through the dampening of wave energy.

The Farming Opportunity

The global demand for seaweed continues to grow rapidly, and insights predict that by 2024 the commercial seaweed market will exceed $87 billion.

Demand currently exceeds supply, and with this pattern set to continue it opens up an exciting opportunity for a new industry to emerge within UK waters.

Our vision is to establish sustainable seaweed farms that contribute socially, ecologically and economically to the local environment and community. Through the creation of collaborative seaweed farms, The Seaweed Project will help to support coastal communities and offer local employment and other opportunities including farm ownership and management.

The Farming Opportunity

The South West waters are perfectly placed to cultivate seaweed in abundance.

Our mission is simple; to create a thriving seaweed farming industry in the Southwest, which puts sustainability and collaboration at its heart.

By focusing on a collaborative approach we enable local people to invest in the industry, and by combining our expertise in marine science, business and market dynamics and a true entrepreneurial spirit, we hope to inspire a collective of well-rounded seaweed entrepreneurs.

The Seaweed Project will also be exploring seaweed as a sustainable material, through various research and development projects.

A multi-million-pound industry

The Southwest could realise a multi-million pound seaweed farming industry with revenues in excess of £10 million in just five years.

Creating 100s of local jobs

Establishing a seaweed industry in the Southwest will create hundreds of local employment opportunities and many more through the supply chains.

Positive impact

The environmental benefits are far reaching; from reducing CO2, to supporting sustainable material development and restoring marine habitats.
